Flattery in Modern Christianity

In this episode of "the White Horse Inn," they deal with Romans 16:17-19.

"I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them. For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive." (Romans 16:17-19)

Flattery, as noted in this episode, has become, almost a rule, rather than an exception in modern American "Christianity." I mean, it gets people in to the churches, when they are told what they want to hear. Is it any wonder that people like Joel Osteen have these monstrous churches?

Interestingly, we are told in Daniel 11:32, of the antichrist that "he shall seduce with flattery those who violate the covenant, but the people who know their God shall stand firm and take action."

It also should be noted that flattery is not looked upon favorably in Scripture.

"Lead me, O LORD, in your righteousness because of my enemies; make your way straight before me. For there is no truth in their mouth; their inmost self is destruction; their throat is an open grave; they flatter with their tongue." (Psalms 5:8-9)

"Save, O LORD, for the godly one is gone; for the faithful have vanished from among the children of man. Everyone utters lies to his neighbor; with flattering lips and a double heart they speak. May the LORD cut off all flattering lips, the tongue that makes great boasts, those who say, 'With our tongue we will prevail, our lips are with us; who is master over us?'" (Psalms 12:1-3)

"A lying tongue hates its victims, and a flattering mouth works ruin." (Proverbs 26:28)

"A man who flatters his neighbor spreads a net for his feet." (Proverbs 29:5)

So, flattery, like I said, certainly isn't looked upon favorably by Holy Scripture.
